The effect of Internet abuse is abysmal, and the problem will only grow from this point on. The Internet is the drug of the new century and will continue to delve into future generations. Society already recognizes drug abuse as a problem, and now we must increasingly face Internet abuse as the newest destructive addiction.

A maladaptive pattern of Internet use, leading to clinically significant impairment or distress as manifested by three (or more) of the following, occuring at any one time during a 12-month period.
Tolerance: with a need for markedly increased amounts of time on the Internet to acheive satisfaction.
Withdrawal: cessation or (reduction) in Internet use that has been heavy and prolonged. Also two or more of the following symptons develop within several days to a month following the withdrawal: psychomotor agitation, anxiety, obsessive thinking about what is happening on the Internet, fantasies or dreams about the Internet.
Internet is often accessed more often for longer periods of time than was intended.
There is a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to control or cut down Internet use.
A great deal of time is spent in activities related to the Internet.
